DEPARTMENT OF ENTOMOLOGY

Entomology is the scientific study of insects, which plays a crucial role in crop production, environmental management, and public health. As insects comprise more than 70% of all animal species on Earth, understanding their behaviour, ecology and biology is essential for ecosystem stability and sustainable farming.

  • Entomology helps to identify and manage insect pests that damage crops, leading to improved yield and food security. It also involves the application of beneficial insects to suppress pest populations without harming the environment.

  • It also involves the study of pollinators, which are essential for vegetable, fruit and seed production. Insects serve as bioindicators of environmental health and biodiversity..

  • Entomology supports the production of silk and honey, which are economically important industries. Insects like lac and mealworms contribute to industries that are related to resin, dye, feed and protein production. Insects are also used in Forensic Entomology, where they are used to estimate the time of death in forensic investigations.

  • The Department of Entomology at N.S. Agricultural College, Markapur, plays a pivotal role in strengthening agricultural education and extension activities related to insect science. The department focuses on key areas such as insect morphology, physiology, taxonomy, integrated pest management (IPM), biological control, apiculture, sericulture, and lac culture.

  • Practical-oriented teaching, field demonstrations ensure that graduates are not only academically sound but also ready to tackle real-time challenges in pest and pollinator management. The department also engages in farmer training and awareness programmes as part of its extension mandate, bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and field application.
